Sarah graduated from Ellis in 1990, three years ahead of me. In the weeks prior to her graduation we travelled to London together on a mini-course trip. Sarah and I became friends again while I was living in Maryland and she in Washington D.C. We drove home to Pittsburgh together for Thanksgiving 1999.

Sarah is now married and back in the 'burgh. She sent this piece from DC on October 7, 2002.

first of all...i love this idea...here's a quick word from my life
september 10th was a very memorable day for me......that afternoon, my now husband then boyfriend, adam, moved into my apartment in dc.

it was a huge deal...i had never lived with a boyfriend..... we were giddy with the thoughts of starting to build a home together and stuff. his parents helped out bringing load after load of stuff in....and finally bid their farewells. we had sushi to celebrate and just relaxed the evening away setting stuff up, but mostly just reflecting on our happiness. with adam, the 21st century entered my life...he came with a huge stereo and surround sound and all the bells and whistles which we didn't set up immediately...so the next morning was the first morning in a very long time that i didn't listen to the news....i got ready in blissful silence and went off into work.....i remember vividly the moment my innocense was lost.....on the bus as we entered georgetown a woman in the front of the bus screamed......i had no idea why - she was listening to a walkman...i was getting off within seconds.....i could tell something was wrong...i didn't know what....

now, adam is a musician....so he isn't generally up early in the morning...when i went into work and saw everything happening....i made the horrible phone call to wake him out of his innocent slumber and let him know what was happening. september 10th was a day i think back upon as being beautifully naive and happy.
i think back on it and that last morning often.
